Why It's Important

Acute Care is health care provided over a short term horizon, medical or surgical in nature, often associated with a hospital setting. Medicare and health insurance supplements have primarily paid for acute illness in the elderly, while Medicaid has funded the health and long-term care needs of impoverished older persons. However, chronic illness has become the overwhelming concern of our society. In fact, most acute care services for the elderly are expended for evaluation and treatment of acute exacerbations of an underlying chronic condition, and most of these episodes could have been prevented given timely access to appropriate out-patient services.
