Why It's Important
Training and education for an increasingly older workforce is needed to retain older workers as employees. The development of effective training that focuses on needs and limitations of older adults as learners is necessary.

How Virginia Is Doing
- Two-thirds (67%) of employers say a trained, educated and adaptable workforce is "very important," and nearly all (94%) agree that it is important to guide long term planning. (ODP BUSINESS LEADER, 2008)
- Half (46%) of employers say their community is performing well on a trained, educated and adaptable workforce, including only one in ten (11%) who say the region performs very well. (ODP BUSINESS LEADER, 2008)

How the U.S. Is Doing
According to a new report entitled, The Maturing of America - Getting Communities on Track for an Aging Population by National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a):
- Over 40 percent of communities do not offer formal job training and retraining programs to help older adults remain in the workforce.
- However, 45 percent of communities reported that discounts were provided at local colleges and universities to older adults interested in taking classes.
